Seven men filed a class-action lawsuit against Johnson County in October, 2015, and the Indiana Court of Appeals (the second highest court in Indiana) has now decided to take it up.  Each of the men, in the year following their arrest, spoke to their public defender for less than five minutes, and all received poorly-negotiated plea bargains.

“These deficiencies run so deep and are so pervasive that there is simply no way that the public defense system in Johnson County can result in the constitutionally adequate provision of assistance of counsel,” an attorney for the plaintiffs stated.
